Trying to avoid foreclosure may be on the mind of many consumers, especially if they live in the areas hit hardest by mortgage difficulties.

A recent report from RealtyTrac noted that California, Nevada and Arizona have metropolitan areas that are facing some of the highest foreclosure rates in the country. Those three states have 13 of the top 20 cities with the highest number of foreclosures.

Calfornia had the highest number of cities with 10, while Nevada had two and Arizona had one. The metro area with the highest foreclosure rate was Las Vegas, which saw one in 28 homes facing a notice. That comes to a 3.51 percent rate, which is 4.9 times greater that the national foreclosure level.

"A total of 28,480 Las Vegas housing units received a foreclosure filing during the quarter, an increase of nearly 13 percent from the previous quarter but a decrease of 19 percent from the first quarter of 2009," the foreclosure website said.

Consumers in these states who are facing the prospect of losing their homes may consider getting help through the Home Affordable Modification Program. The effort, started by the federal government last year, tries to reduce mortgage payments for borrowers that are in trouble.ADNFCR-3423-ID-19755730-ADNFCR
